Autumn Equinox; Permission to Change
The Autumn Equinox: Standing at the Threshold Between Light and Dark
There are moments throughout the year when the Earth seems to whisper a little louder, and the Autumn Equinox is one of them. It is a threshold, a pause between what has been and what is becoming. It is a moment when we are invited to stand between the light and the darkness and recognize that we need both. Astronomically, the Autumn Equinox marks the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, beginning astronomical autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. Around the Equinox, day and night are nearly equal in length. Energetically and spiritually, however, the Equinox can represent something much deeper. It is an invitation to come back into balance.
The Sacred Balance of Light and Darkness
We spend so much of our lives reaching for the light. We want the healing, the breakthrough, the abundance, the clarity, and the joy. But nature reminds us every autumn that darkness is not something we always need to fear or avoid. There are things that grow in the light, and there are things that can only be discovered in the dark. Seeds rest beneath the soil. Roots grow where no one can see them. The Earth itself begins pulling its energy inward. The Autumn Equinox reminds us that our own spiritual journey has seasons, too. Sometimes we are meant to bloom, sometimes we are meant to harvest, sometimes we are meant to release, and sometimes we are simply meant to become quiet enough to hear what our soul has been trying to tell us.
What Are You Harvesting?
Autumn has long been associated with the harvest, which makes the Equinox a beautiful time to look back over the year and recognize what has grown. Think about who you were at the beginning of this year compared with who you are now. What have you learned? What have you survived? What have you created? Where have you grown? What parts of yourself have you reclaimed? We are often so focused on what still needs to happen that we forget to acknowledge what already has.
Your harvest isn't only material. Sometimes the harvest is finally trusting yourself. Sometimes it is saying no when you once would have said yes. Sometimes it is recognizing a pattern that you couldn't see before. Sometimes it is a relationship, an opportunity, a new idea, an awakening spiritual gift, or a completely new version of yourself. There are things growing within us that don't always look impressive from the outside, but they matter. The Equinox gives us an opportunity to recognize them.
What Is Ready to Fall Away?
Look at the trees. They don't chase their leaves or convince themselves that because something was once beautiful, they must hold onto it forever. When the season changes, they release. There is tremendous wisdom in that. The Autumn Equinox can bring our attention to what we are carrying simply because we have become accustomed to carrying it. Old expectations, old identities, beliefs inherited from other people, fear, guilt, obligations, relationships with ourselves that no longer reflect who we are becoming, and even dreams that belonged to an earlier version of us can begin asking to be released.
Releasing something doesn't necessarily mean it was bad. Sometimes something was exactly what we needed for one season of our lives, and then the season changed. We can be grateful for what something taught us without continuing to carry it forever. The magic is recognizing when it is time to let the leaf fall.
The Crossroads Energy of the Equinox
This is one of the reasons I think of the Equinox as crossroads energy. One path represents what has already been lived, while another stretches ahead into something we cannot completely see yet. And we stand between them. Crossroads have long carried spiritual symbolism because they represent choice, transition, possibility, and encounters with the unknown.
There is something incredibly powerful about those spaces in our lives when we realize that we cannot go back to who we were, but we don't completely know who we are becoming yet. That space can feel uncomfortable, but it can also be incredibly magical. You don't necessarily need to have every answer when you arrive at a crossroads. Sometimes you simply need to recognize that you are standing at one. Instead of only asking, "What is going to happen next?" we can begin asking, "Who am I choosing to become next?" That question puts some of the magic back into our own hands.
Entering the Darker Half of the Year
After the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, the nights continue growing longer as we journey toward the Winter Solstice. Spiritually, I like to think of this as an invitation inward. The energy of spring and summer often encourages outward movement—creating, building, doing, and expanding. Autumn begins calling us home to ourselves.
It asks us to listen differently and to notice what we couldn't hear while everything was moving so quickly. This can be a beautiful season for deepening intuition, exploring our spiritual gifts, working with our dreams, receiving guidance, creating, healing, and understanding the parts of ourselves that have been waiting for our attention. You may even notice that you naturally crave more quiet as the season changes. Listen to that. You don't have to move at the same energetic pace during every season of your life. Nature doesn't, and neither should we.
The Energy of the Threshold
Thresholds are interesting places. You aren't completely on one side anymore, but you haven't fully stepped into the other. That is the energy I feel so strongly around the Autumn Equinox. It is a moment to acknowledge both—the person you have been and the person you are becoming, what worked and what didn't, what you are grateful for and what you are ready to release, the light and the shadow, the harvest and the empty field.
There doesn't have to be judgment attached to either one. Both have something to teach us, and perhaps that is part of the deeper magic of the Equinox. Balance isn't necessarily about making everything in our lives perfectly equal. Sometimes balance is simply being willing to acknowledge the whole of ourselves.
You Are Allowed to Change With the Seasons
Perhaps this is one of my favorite lessons of autumn: you are allowed to change. You are allowed to release versions of yourself that once kept you safe. You are allowed to want something different. You are allowed to slow down. You are allowed to become curious about a new path. You are allowed to begin again.
You don't have to know exactly where the next path leads before taking the first step. The Autumn Equinox isn't asking you to have everything figured out. It is simply inviting you to stand at the threshold long enough to listen. Honor what you have grown. Recognize what has completed its journey. Turn toward the path ahead and allow yourself to wonder what might be waiting there.
Maybe that is the true magic of the Autumn Equinox. It reminds us that endings and beginnings aren't always separate things. Sometimes they are happening at exactly the same time. The leaf falls as the tree prepares for another season. The light fades as we begin discovering what can only be seen in the darkness. One version of ourselves begins falling away as another quietly starts to emerge.
And somewhere in that beautiful space between what was and what will be, we remember that we are part of the changing seasons too.
